Top Tips for a Sunless Tan

Healthy, long-lasting tan

A sun-kissed complexion exudes glow and beauty which is often why we tend to receive compliments such as "Wow, you're so tan!" when returning from a summer vacation. A tan achieved through extended sun exposure is risky. Exposing the skin to UV rays for extended periods of time can lead to sunburn, premature skin aging and cause wrinkles and unwanted dark spots. UV radiation increases the risk of skin cancer. Therefore, it is always wise to apply sunscreen with a medium or high protection factor at all times.

Tanning is the process whereby the skin colour is darkened or tanned. Exposure to UV radiation triggers the cells in the body to produce more melanin, the pigment that gives your skin, eyes and hair their colour. When skin cells are threatened by UV rays, they kick into protection mode. The more melanin is produced, the more tanned the skin becomes.

There are, however, several other ways to achieve a natural tan without risking skin health. Let's take a closer look:

1. Nutrition

Nutrition is a more low-key way of achieving a "tan from within". It is nowhere near to the likes of a conventional tan, however, nutrition can primarily be used to support the tanning process. Certain foods containing beta-carotene can lend the skin a subtle tint. These foods include carrots, tomatoes, peppers, sweet potatoes, beetroot, mango, oranges and papayas.

2. Bronzing Powder

Bronzing powder is the easiest and quickest way of adding a sunless, sun-kissed glow to the face, neck and décolleté. It allows you to blend and intensify the application until the desired finish is achieved. Bronzer can be used on the forehead, chin and cheekbones to contour and sculpt the face for a more chiseled look. The formulas are usually available with a matte finish making them perfect for use during the summertime.

The Hydrating Bronzer by The Organic Pharmacy provides a natural glow and defines the facial contours. The silky-soft powder, which adapts to the natural colour of the complexion, is enriched with numerous antioxidants and moisturising hyaluronic acid. The vegan ingredients have a smoothing and nourishing effect on the skin.

3. Tinted Lotion / Gel

Tinted lotions and gels are another great sunless tan go-to. Not only do they add a natural glow to the skin, but the formulas are also highly moisturising - an added benefit that the skin requires during summer. These lotions and gels are ideal for use on the body. They quickly and effortlessly conceal minor imperfections, veins, scars or bruises whilst providing the illusion of an even-looking complexion.

The Sun-Lite Sheer Lingerie for Legs by Legology is a tinted cream designed for the legs. The cream gives the wearer bare-leg confidence as it cools and nourishes the skin. A fool-proof option no matter what your skin type. Added benefit: it pampers tired legs and exudes the Legology signature scent, "Capri Crush"

4. Self-tanning Products

The classic amongst the sunless tanning options: self-tanners. Frequently formulated with DHA (Dihydroxyaceton) that reacts with the proteins and amino acids of the cells found in the upper layer of the skin. This interaction results in a tanning effect that varies depending on the self-tanning formula i.e. concentration of DHA.

It takes between 1 and 12 hours to achieve the final results. In order to achieve an even and beautiful finish, it is essential to exfoliate the skin beforehand. Follow with a thin layer of moisturiser on more "rougher" areas of the body, such as the knees and elbows, or forgo the use of self-tanners on these areas. Apply the product with an appropriate mitt or glove and be sure to thoroughly wash the hands afterwards. Side note: self-tanners do not, and we repeat, do not provide protection against the harmful effects of UV rays.

The Gradual Tanning Moisturiser by Luna Bronze is perfect for beginners or prolonging the life of your tan. The product is enriched with nourishing and moisturising ingredients and ensures a light, natural finish.
